Animated News Weekly Archive

One downside to getting to celebrate another big milestone like our 20th anniversary is that there's not a lot more left to show or tell about our history. However, after some major excavation deep into the embarrassingly cluttered AV archives, we were able to find another dusty bit of long lost content under some old boxes of cease and desist letters and moldy Norm Of The North promotional plush.

From the first week of our launch in October of 2003 and intermittently over the next six years or so, we had an email newsletter. Sure these messages may not be too useful anymore! But they're actually kind of fun as a sort of virtual time capsule. And perhaps some future animation researcher might find the links useful. Either way, they're part of our story and we're happy to be able to move them from the dark, cobwebbed recesses of the AV archives and back into the warm light of our anniversary celebration!

So travel back 20 years with us to see how we covered the top stories of the day!

----FRANK THOMAS (1912 – 2004)----

The legendary Disney animator passed away last Wednesday, three days after his 92nd birthday, leaving his lifelong friend Ollie Johnston as the last surviving of the original “Nine Old Men”, Walt’s inner-circle of his finest artists. Thomas worked at the Disney Studios from the days of the earliest color Mickey Mouse shorts up until 1978, when he and Johnston turned their attention to authoring several books on their craft, with the ground-breaking “Disney Animation: The Illusion Of Life” still being regarded as the best of its kind. In 1995, the two were documented in the feature “Frank And Ollie”, directed by Thomas’ son Ted. Recently, they set up a website and contributed again to the “Frank And Ollie” DVD release last year. Frank’s guidance in the world of animation will sorely be missed.

----BUSINESS----

The SUMMER BOX OFFICE has closed for business now, so who were the winners and losers? Leading the pack were the inevitable sequels to Spider-Man and Harry Potter, with Shrek 2 the all-out champ, while solid earner status fell to The Day After Tomorrow, Troy and the excellent I, Robot. Bringing up the rear were public failures Around The World In 80 Days and the abysmal Catwoman. Even so, adding it all up means that Hollywood had a record-breaking summer, hitting ticket sales of $4 billion! Here are the official studio lines:
