Unlike the April Fool’s story, this one is sadly true. Disney has decided to shut down the LucasArts Entertainment Company, which has been the primary developer for Star Wars video games. The company will now outsource production of future titles to third party developers. “The news comes after several years of diminishing returns for the struggling game developer. Despite the iconic stature of Star Wars in pop culture today, LucasArts’ core business strategy of developing and licensing games based on the popular sci-fi franchise has steadily declined in sales and critical reception,” NBC News reports. But what can be seen as a good business move by some can also be seen as a bad one for the former employees and the fans. In recent years, LucasArts was best known for the well-reviewed Star Wars: The Old Republic games, and was at work at two more games, Star Wars 1313 and Star Wars: First Assault. Production on both titles, for the time being at least, has been put on hold.
