Just checking in with a quick nod to James’ review of Sony Animation’s second in-house feature Surf’s Up, which opened to a solid, if unspectacular $18 million this past weekend. Calling it “a wonderfully original animated film”, James praises the documentary approach that gives the movie its uniqueness before starting to worry that, in copy-cat Hollywood fashion, we’ll now see a slew of animated features playing on the same gimmick. With the amount of studios now pounding out such fare, I hope they can stay fresher than that.
Still with the surfing penguins, and a reminder that Josh just posted a wonderfully in-depth interview with Surf’s Up‘s co-directors, Ash Brannon and Chris Buck, which covers the duo’s past projects and full coverage of their new movie.
Lastly, Rodney has added his thoughts on BCI’s Volume One release of She-Ra: Princess of Power: Season One, which features a nice roundup of the show’s history and back story, as well as his excitable comments on the handling of the material itself, of course. And when you’re done with all of that, don’t forget to check in at Contest Corner for a chance to win the upcoming Animaniacs: Volume 3 collection thanks to Warner Home Video.
Stay tooned! – Ben.
