Variety reports that France has chosen the controversial animated film Persepolis as its entry for the 2008 Oscars for best foreign-language film. Based on the graphic novel by Marjane Satrapi, Persepolis tells the story of an Iranian girl growing up at the time of the Islamic revolution. The film won jury prize at the Cannes film Festival this year and has been a hit with critics and audiences alike in France, grossing more than $9 million.
