Just time to sneak in one final update before the weekend hits, and I wanted to point out Rodney Figueiredo’s excellent review of the best of the recent Walt Disney Treasures wave, More Silly Symphonies, a collection of the remaining shorts that the Studio produced under this banner. There are some really neat cartoons in here – some I haven’t seen for years, some I’ve never seen at all – and is probably the last such title that even aficionados will be excited about.
The review comes at a time when the future of the Treasures is uncertain…please don’t forget to contact Disney directly and voice our collective view that we’d at least like to see the Donald Duck series rounded out with a final two volumes, and those rumored Education and More Rarities too, please! Do your bit and help save the Walt Disney Treasures!
Though that series looks close to demise, we can feel safe that we haven’t yet seen the best in Roy Disney’s sure-to-be-replacement line, the Walt Disney Legacy Collection. Already the True Life Adventures have paved the way for more exciting content to come this year, and there’s even the hint of the brilliant 1946 feature Song Of The South coming to disc under Roy’s aegis. Hop on over, Brer Rabbit like, to Christian Willis’ exhaustive Song Of The South website for a quote from Roy himself on that, plus a link to some amazing behind-the-scenes footage that we’d certainly like to see on any such future DVD package.
Finally, Randall Cyrenne is back with his second of three pieces looking back on the work of Bill Hanna and Joe Barbera, A Cartoon Appreciation, Part 2, and Josh Armstrong has added a cool little DVD Deal for you Movie Gallery renters.
Have a fun weekend! – Ben.
