(Cambridge, MA) — In a precedent-setting deal for the publishing world, Candlewick Press announces the October 2006 publication of Moongirl, a children’s picture book based on the award-winning short animated film of the same name produced by Laika Entertainment, which will be released in an exclusive package that includes a DVD of the film. The deal is a first in several ways: the first time a short movie has been turned into a book, the first time a short film has been exclusively distributed through the book trade worldwide, and the first partnership between the nation’s largest employee-owned children’s press and a film studio.

Described as a “new lunar myth” about a young boy’s fantastic adventure to the moon, Moongirl was written and directed by Henry Selick for Laika Entertainment. Selick, whose film credits include the acclaimed animated films The Nightmare Before Christmas and James and the Giant Peach, also wrote the book, with illustrations by Peter Chan and colorist Courtney Booker. Chan and Booker also worked on the film.
