Ben Simon over at DVD Toons has words of wisdom for those considering picking up Artisan’s recent edition of the 1982 Rankin/Bass feature The Last Unicorn: “I don’t think I’ve come across a film yet that has been treated with such little respect on disc. What [fans have] been given is one of the worst pan-and-scan transfers I’ve ever seen – and from a substandard film print filled with speckles and dust to boot! This disc is a travesty of presenting a much-loved animated film on DVD [and] unless you really have to add this region one edition of The Last Unicorn to your collection, I would recommend not touching this issue with a barge pole!” For those seeking hope, Germany’s Concorde Video have issued “a nice new shining widescreen transfer which preserves the original framing (and even features some extras) and also offers a new 5.1 Dolby Digital mix”, while a UK edition is also available.
What ever you do, no matter how much it begs…never, ever purchase the Last Unicorn DVD!
