For those eager to own this summer’s big hits from 20th Century Fox, you may want to hold out that little bit longer. The company has made it quite clear that the single-discs of effects-filled blockbusters The Day After Tomorrow and I, Robot will be supplanted by more elaborate 2-disc editions in the new year. The process, known to annoyed DVD fans as “double-dipping”, is common among studios who wish to issue a barebones title to the market while a special edition is completed. In this case however, these editions are already complete, with the mentioned titles, as well as the live-action comedy Garfield (which was more computer animated rather than FX filled, unless you include Jennifer Love’s Hewitts), being released as 2-discers in the UK and Europe, while the US just gets the singles. So, in this instance, it really is a case of a studio fishing a title for everything it’s worth, and it would be prudent for fans of these films to catch them at their own game and wait for the ultimate versions down the line…
