Bruno Bozzetto (Milan, 1938) made his first animation short Tapum la Storia delle Armi (Tapum, the History of Weapons) at age 20, and immediately drew the audience’s and the critics’ attention. Bozzetto first achieved worldwide recognition with his character Mr Rossi: a middle-aged average man that was the star of many animation shorts and 3 feature films. In 1965, Bozzetto created his first animated feature film West and Soda followed in 1968 by VIP: My Brother Superman and in 1976 by his masterpiece Allegro non Troppo, the Italian response to Disney’s Fantasia.
Bozzetto has always asserted that animated films can help the audience understand difficult concepts and has dedicated himself to educational works, making about 100 films with Italian science journalist Piero Angela as part of the TV show Quark. But Bozzetto’s main passion is still producing his own shorts: he won many awards in his career, most notably the Golden Bear at the 1990 Berlin Film Festival in the “best short” category for Mister Tao, and the 1991 Oscar Nomination for Grasshoppers.
With his unique style and his great sensibility for humanitarian themes, Bozzetto’s work is a testament to Italian ingenuity, making him a worthy member of the pantheon of animation.
