Reading instruction is often delayed for deaf children, thus cancelling the option for traditional textbooks. Furthermore, the students may not be able to take advantage of such items as television and dinner table conversation, while their parents may not be fluent enough in sign language to teach math. Hence, at Purdue University, two professors are studying how to use computer animation and virtual reality to teach deaf children in grades K through 4. The main subject in consideration is mathematics, including the communication of math terminology through American Sign Language. More information regarding this important study may be found at the Animation World Network.
