Animated News Weekly Archive

One downside to getting to celebrate another big milestone like our 20th anniversary is that there's not a lot more left to show or tell about our history. However, after some major excavation deep into the embarrassingly cluttered AV archives, we were able to find another dusty bit of long lost content under some old boxes of cease and desist letters and moldy Norm Of The North promotional plush.

From the first week of our launch in October of 2003 and intermittently over the next six years or so, we had an email newsletter. Sure these messages may not be too useful anymore! But they're actually kind of fun as a sort of virtual time capsule. And perhaps some future animation researcher might find the links useful. Either way, they're part of our story and we're happy to be able to move them from the dark, cobwebbed recesses of the AV archives and back into the warm light of our anniversary celebration!

So travel back 20 years with us to see how we covered the top stories of the day!

Hello, and welcome again to the Animated News Weekly. Please copy and paste any split links into your browser for more info on a given subject. Headliners from the past couple of weeks were. . .

----RIP TIGGER AND PIGLET----

PAUL WINCHELL – last week saw the sad passing, at age 82, of one of animation’s most distinctive voices: that of Winnie The Pooh’s pal Tigger, Paul Winchell. Apart from his voice work, Winchell was also a prolific inventor, including an artificial heart that provided the basis for the development of the first implanted artificial hearts. As Tigger was often fond of saying (a phrase Winchell credits to his British-born wife), “T.T.F.N. – Ta Ta For Now”:

JOHN FIEDLER – not 24 hours after Paul Winchell passed away, news came in that his co-starring voice in the Pooh cartoons, that of Piglet’s John Fiedler, had also died, aged 80. Fiedler also provided voices for numerous other Disney characters, right up to a cameo in The Emperor’s New Groove and in his signature role in this year’s Pooh’s Heffalump Movie and the upcoming Pooh’s Heffalump Halloween Movie:

----FEATURE FILMS----

CHICKEN LITTLE 3D – Disney’s big CGI release will also “go large” and do what the company had been toying with doing to the original Toy Story by releasing the film in 3D. With LucasFilm’s Industrial Light And Magic on board, the film will open in select markets in this “improved” edition. Full press release here:

THE RETURN OF THE KING – currently being sponsored by Volkswagen (shouldn't they have done this for the Herbie film?) is the trailer for Peter Jackson's KING KONG, which features a surprising amount of full-on monkey business rather than the glimpses we usually catch in teasers for such big event movies. KING KONG, featuring Andy (Gollum) Serkis under a heavy, hairy load of CGI make-up, opens worldwide this December:
