Animated News Weekly Archive

One downside to getting to celebrate another big milestone like our 20th anniversary is that there's not a lot more left to show or tell about our history. However, after some major excavation deep into the embarrassingly cluttered AV archives, we were able to find another dusty bit of long lost content under some old boxes of cease and desist letters and moldy Norm Of The North promotional plush.

From the first week of our launch in October of 2003 and intermittently over the next six years or so, we had an email newsletter. Sure these messages may not be too useful anymore! But they're actually kind of fun as a sort of virtual time capsule. And perhaps some future animation researcher might find the links useful. Either way, they're part of our story and we're happy to be able to move them from the dark, cobwebbed recesses of the AV archives and back into the warm light of our anniversary celebration!

So travel back 20 years with us to see how we covered the top stories of the day!

Animated News Weekly 06/06/04 – 06/12/04:

Hello, and welcome to another Animated News Weekly. Please copy and paste any split links into your browser for more info on a given subject. This week’s news…

----FEATURE FILMS----

BOX OFFICE – Slipping to number five is SHREK 2 with a healthy $7 million plus, while GARFIELD, despite scathing reviews, opened with a not too disrespectful $8m. Sticking to first place was HARRY POTTER: even with a 64% drop it still managed to pull in over $11m:

SHARK TALE – it seems dubbing journalistic characters to a popular voice from various countries of release is proving to be a trend at DreamWorks. Following Shrek 2’s reporter character voice changes for the UK market, it seems their fishy tale is getting a localised makeover too:

----DVD RELEASES----

SHREK 2 – still in theaters! – looks to be pulling the same stunt the first film did when it comes to DVD. Instead of a standard Tuesday issue, DreamWorks are looking to make a dent in The Incredibles opening day by releasing their animated hit on disc November 5. The ploy worked last time when the original Shrek was put in stores when Monsters Inc opened in theaters, taking away an estimated 25% of potential earnings for the Pixar film:

----BUSINESS----

HENRY SELICK hasn’t really lived up to his early promise with Slow Bob In The Lower Dimensions, The Nightmare Before Christmas and James And The Giant Peach. MonkeyBone featured some pretty interesting ideas and was overall fun, but was structurally a mess and he’s been pretty quiet since. Now comes news of a step up in fortunes: Selick has been hired as supervising director of Vinton Studios, which will in some way see him team up with Nightmare’s Tim Burton again: the director’s new feature THE CORPSE BRIDE is in production at the studio. Selick’s forgoing his beloved stop-motion technique for his first official project however, and getting straight to work on the CG short MOONGIRL:

TOM STAGGS, senior executive vice president and chief financial officer of Disney, will talk directly to investors this Tuesday, June 15. A webcast and replay will be available:

The unit makes the DTV and theatrical sequels, though there are rumors of their own “first run” projects in the pipeline (free sub req):
