The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced the winners of this years’ Scientific and Technical Achievement Academy Awards. Several awards relate to the art of special effects animation, including one to Stephen Regelous “for the design and development of Massive, the autonomous agent animation system used for the battle sequences in The Lord of the Rings trilogy” and one to Christophe Hery, Ken McGaugh, and Joe Letteri for their groundbreaking techniques “used to create realistic-looking skin on digitally created characters”. The awards will be presented at a ceremony on February 14 in Pasadena.
