Warner Brothers’ The Ant Bully opens today in 3,050 theatres, according to Box Office Mojo. The film gets mixed reviews from the critics, garnering a just rotten 53% at Rotten Tomatoes. Entertainment Weekly says it is “an effortlessly clever animated confection”. However, the Hollywood Reporter says the film is “anonymously generic and charmlessly mechanical”. The film’s message also seems to be dividing the critics. The Washington Post hypes the “rigorously moral point of view”, and Groucho Reviews likes “the political allegory that separates this one from the pack”. On the other hand the Minneapolis Star Tribune thinks “the film’s heavyhanded lessons” make it into a “predictable and preachy snoozefest”, and eFilmCritic.com says the “dopey inspirational moments [may] win over young children for a while, but it does nothing to set itself apart”. Box Office Mojo predicts a third place opening weekend with $13.3 million, just ahead of Monster House’s predicted (second week) fourth place finish with $12.4 million.
