Bert Klein, director of the animated sequences for the upcoming Fat Albert movie has written in to discuss the role animation plays in the mostly live-action movie and the care that went into creating those sequences: “Regarding the Fat Albert animation sequences it has 11 minutes of full 2D animation animated in house at Warner Bros. by mostly ex-Disney feature supervising animators. We had to re-design the characters due to legal reasons, so we used the opportunity to give them as much fun and appeal that we could. The design work is mostly that of James Lopez, who spent close to ten years as a supervising animator at Disney on several features. However the final movie is received, we all put our hearts into doing some old style animation that we think will be fun to watch. The work was very stressful, but we managed to have fun and hopefully did a good turn for a medium we all love.” Kudos to Bert for helping to keep the flame of 2D animation alive.
