It’s official – Comcast owned NBC/Universal will acquire DreamWorks Animation, the sale bringing DWA back under the same fold as its original parent DreamWorks/Amblin, whose films are now distributed by Universal. Jeffrey Katzenberg’s DWA will finally compete with Disney on a massive scale, from television to theme parks and, while he will stay on in a new capacity, Universal’s Illumination Entertainment’s Chris Meledandri will “guide” DWA moving forward. The $3.8bn sale is close to Katzenberg’s asking price of $4bn, putting DWA’s value in the same ballpark as Marvel and Lucasfilm’s sales to Disney. For full details, The Hollywood Reporter has more.
