YouTube user “kaptainkristian” has put together a video essay chronicling the early years of Superman, with a focus on how he was defined not by the comics pages, but by a series of cartoons directed by Max Fleischer during the 1940’s. It was from these shorts that the Man of Steel got several of his most iconic character traits, including his ability to to fly (before then, Superman was just able to leap across tall buildings).
