Despite interviews with the filmmakers published only days ago claiming otherwise, Disney has officially announced that a Frozen sequel is in fact in development. The news was made at the company’s annual meeting of shareholders this morning, with John Lasseter and Josh Gad on stage to provide the scoop. “Jennifer Lee and Chris Buck have come up with a great idea for a sequel and you will be hearing a lot more about it and we’re taking you back to Arendelle,” Lasseter said. “We are so excited about that.” Fans will have to wait a long time for any further details, but expect for Idina Menzel and Kristen Bell to almost certainly be returning as Elsa and Anna, along with other members of the original film’s cast. No release date has been set, but Elsa and Anna will be returning to the big screen in the short Frozen Fever, which will be attached to all screenings of Cinderella starting tonight. Frozen, of course, is the highest grossing animated movie of all time, earning more than $1.2 billion worldwide.
