Disney’s much-marketed Maleficent was unleashed in movie theaters this weekend, with very strong results, Collider is reporting. The live-action “update” on the fairy tale–which re-imagines the popular villain as a sympathetic anti-hero of sorts–made a fantastic $70 million according to studio estimates. For those keeping score, that is a lot less than the $120 million Alice in Wonderland opened to in 2010, and a bit less than the $79 million that Oz: The Great and Powerful made in 2013, but neither of those movies came out during the crowded summer movie marketplace. Final numbers are due tomorrow.
