The first images from producer Guillermo del Toro’s animated The Book of Life have been revealed by USA Today, along with brief interviews with Channing Tatum (who voices the film’s lead) and director Jorge Gutierrez. The movie, which tells the story of a matador’s son who dreams of being a guitar player, is more or less centered around Mexico’s Day of the Dead, with the film sending its hero to The Land of the Living, The Land of the Remembered, and The Land of the Forgotten. “I have been pitching the story and people have been saying, ‘This is cool, but you’re never going to get it made,’ ” said Gutierrez. “To other cultures it might seem dark, but the Day of the Dead is actually a very positive thing. It’s about joyfully remembering the people no longer with us.” Also starring Zoe Saldana, Diego Luna, Ron Perlman, Cheech Marin, Hector Elizondo, Placido Domingo, and others, The Book of Life opens everywhere October 17th.
