Legendary film critic Roger Ebert passed away from complications with cancer at the age of 70. In 1975, Ebert became the first movie critic to win a Pulitzer Prize, for his Chicago-Sun Times reviews. Later, Ebert partnered with Gene Siskel on the first show dedicated to film reviews, Sneak Previews. The two would go on to headline the popular syndicated TV series Siskel & Ebert, famous for their “thumbs up/thumbs down” reviews. Variety reflects more on his life.

Update: Producer Al Jean reflects on when Ebert and Siskel guest-starred on the animated television series The Critic. “Gene kept asking me, ‘Which of us is giving a better performance?’ When I would reply, in grandmotherly fashion, ‘You were both equally good,’ he wouldn’t buy it,” Jean tells Vulture. “I guess a terribly sad day like today is the time to say, ‘Roger, you were a little bit better.'”
