Despite early reports that indicated otherwise, Planes didn’t open on top this weekend, or even cross the $30 million mark. Still, the $22 million debut it saw was a good one, and the film received an A- from film goers, although that is more or less common for family films. Noting that there are no more animated movies coming to theaters until late September, Disney executive distribution president Dave Hollis confidently told The Hollywood Reporter that they “have an all-audience picture that will be the primary option for families until then.” Planes, as has been mentioned on this site before, cost $50 million to make, which while extremely expensive for a straight-to-DVD film is a modest budget for a theatrical movie.
