Among marketing materials for Monsters University, one of the most frequently shown scenes involves a college-aged James P. Sullivan introducing himself to roommate Mike Wazowski. Monsters, Inc. fans have taken issue with this footage, since the 2001 hit has Mike joking to Sulley, “You’ve been jealous of my good looks since the fourth grade, pal!”
Now Monsters University director Dan Scanlon is setting the record straight, reports /Film. The director explains that early versions of University unsuccessfully tried to incorporate the characters’ time in elementary school. Finally, Monsters, Inc. director Pete Docter and Pixar head John Lasseter told Scanlon, “It’s great that you’re honoring that, but you have to do what’s right for the story.” He adds, “So yeah, now we joke that that’s just an old monster expression: ‘You’ve been jealous of my good looks since the fourth grade!'”
