For this year’s first quarter, DreamWorks Animation reported $134.6 million in revenue and $5.6 million in net income, partially thanks to The Croods in theaters and several titles on home video. Thus far, The Croods has collected almost $480 million worldwide, well on its way to beating Disney’s Oz the Great and Powerful as the No. 1 movie released during the first four months of 2013. On the home video front, Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted collected $22.8 million, Rise of the Guardians collected $9.6 million, and Puss in Boots collected $7.5 million. The Hollywood Reporter has more on this story.
THR also spreads the word that characters from DreamWorks’ How to Train Your Dragon, Shrek, Madagascar, and Kung Fu Panda will be part of the DreamWorks Experience at the Sands Cotai Central Resort in Macao beginning July 1. In other Panda news, THR writes that a California appeals court has upheld a verdict in favor of DreamWorks, following a lawsuit in which writer Terence Dunn claimed the studio stole his idea for the successful movie franchise. Lastly, All Things D indicates DreamWorks could soon acquire AwesomenessTV, a YouTube network aimed squarely at teens and tweens.
