Bad news for traditional/2D animation fans, from The Guardian, Disney states they do not have any future plans for the medium. All of the current Disney movies in production are in 3D, which has become the industry standard. “To my knowledge we’re not developing a 2D or hand-drawn feature animated film right now,” said [Bob] Iger. “There is a fair amount of activity going on in hand-drawn animation but it’s largely for television at this point.” Several 2D movies were released in the past few years (The Princess and the Frog and Winnie the Pooh), but their earnings paled compared to their 3D counterparts. There is a rumor circulating that Disney may develop a movie in the Paperman style, which recently won the Academy Award. Traditional animation is not dead, but it will be awhile before we see such a film under the Disney umbrella.
