According to Bloomberg, Disney has partnered with the the Ministry of Culture’s China Animation Group and Tencent, China’s largest Internet provider, to develop and create animation for TV, movies, and the biggest media platform: the Internet. The deal was signed in February, giving Disney access to the world’s largest audience and potentially bigger box office earnings. Tencent hopes to earn a few bucks in their current business ventures, especially their gaming. “Disney will provide its expertise in storytelling from concept creation and story development to market research,” hopefully creating characters that will endear themselves to the Chinese movie audience. Another reason to break into the market is that the Chinese government is giving tax breaks to companies that focus on culture. Will we be seeing a slew of new Disney brand characters that will cater exclusively to the Chinese public? If so, let’s hope we will see them in the West.
