Universal’s Easter comedy Hop beat the expectations of many to win the weekend with $38.1 million, according to studio estimates. Made by the people resposible for last year’s hit Despicable Me, the animated/live-action film may have had the best opening weekend of the year so far, depending on how actual numbers turn out to be when they come in on Monday. Starring Russell Brand, James Marsden and Hugh Laurie, Hop didn’t fare very well with critics, but it’s apparently scoring well with audiences so far, with a current CinemaScore of A-.
