In one of the biggest box office upsets in recent times, Sony’s live-action/computer-animated flick The Smurfs, grossed far more than pre-release projections had indicated. Tying with DreamWorks/Universal’s much hyped Cowboys & Aliens for No. 1 in North America, with a $36.2 million opening, The Smurfs emerged as the big winner of the weekend despite being critically panned and dismissed by box office trackers. With just 20% rating at their Tomatometer, the animated flick has earned a “rotten” status on RottenTomatoes. Source: LA Times.
