When you take the director of a post-apocalyptic animated movie about talking ragdolls and pair him with the special effects company responsible for James Cameron’s Avatar, you don’t necessarily expect them to come up with a Thomas the Tank Engine movie as a result. And yet that’s exactly what’s happening. Deadline is reporting that 9 director Shane Acker has teamed up with WETA Digital to make a live-action/animated feature film based off of the popular talking train. The plot will involve a boy visiting the magical Island of Sodor, where his father has been to in the past but is unable to remember. Contrary to what some websites are reporting, this won’t be the first Thomas movie to hit theaters. A live-action film starring Alec Baldwin and Peter Fonda, called Thomas and the Magic Railroad, was released in 2000 to savage reviews and poor box office results.
