Four films in, and Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean franchise is still going strong. The latest installment, On Stranger Tides, opened to $90 million in the US this weekend, IndieWire is reporting. Although it was less than the first two sequels opened to in 2006 and 2007, it was still enough to score the film the best opening of 2011 so far. In addition, the movie set an overseas box office record, bringing in an impressive $256 million in international tickets. On Stranger Tides faced a number of obstacles when it came to finding an audience, including the lack of the original trilogy’s shipmates Keira Knightley and Orlando Bloom, as well as the worst reviews of any movie in the series so far.
