“The king has returned”…and in a big way, too, as Disney’s The Lion King saw a surprise victory at the box office this weekend. Box Office Mojo is reporting that the 3-D re-release–which is also being shown in 2D at most theaters–nearly tripled expectations with a very strong take of $29 million. The movie is supposedly going to be playing on the big screen for only two weekends, but given the massive success that its found, it wouldn’t be at all surprising if Disney were to decide to extend its run.
