Despite being almost universally panned by critics, M. Night Shyamalan’s The Last Airbender managed to surpass many expectations this week at the box office. Although unable to beat The Twilight Saga: Eclipse for the top spot, the special effects film was still able to earn an estimated $40 million during its opening weekend, and has made $57 million since coming out on Thursday. Meanwhile, Disney and Pixar’s Toy Story 3 continued its impressive run with a strong take of $30 million. With a current total of $289 million, it should be able to surpass the $300 million mark by the end of next week.
