The Hollywood Reporter confirms that the Cannes Film Festival is about to go 3D with the world premiere of Disney/Pixar’s digital offering Up, which will open the Festival de Cannes in the south of France on May 13. Festival organizers saw an early version of the film and “absolutely loved it”, says Mark Zoradi, president of Walt Disney Motion Picture Group, leading to the decision to spotlight the film Out Of Competition. Up will mark the first time an animated 3D title has been screened in the opening slot, but Cannes has always been animation friendly, with Walt Disney’s Dumbo welcomed in 1941, to last year’s Waltz With Bashir being highlights. Up will open in the US a couple of weeks after the screening, on May 29, and roll out internationally soon after, spreading to the rest of France on July 29.
