Opening today in about 2,400 theaters is the animated sci-fi comedy Space Chimps, which follows the efforts of several astronaut primates to save a planet from a tyrannical leader and get back home to Earth. The movie is not faring too well with the critics, scoring only 37% on Rotten Tomatoes. “With cheapie effects and a barrage of monkey puns, Space Chimps is too often content with only going halfway,” reviewer Jim Slotek states. Box office predictions estimate an opening of about $6.3 million or so, placing the film at number seven on the top ten ten list for the weekend. Word of mouth surrounding Space Chimps is not all negative, however; popular critic Robert Ebert calls the movie “delightful from beginning to end: A goofy space opera.”
