No Angelina Jolie or Jackie Chan in sight, but actors Jack Black, Dustin Hoffman, Lucy Liu, James Hong and Michael Clarke Duncan hit the red carpet yesterday at the Los Angeles premiere of their new film Kung Fu Panda at the (where else?) Grauman’s Chinese Theater. Also in attendance were the movie’s talented directors John Stevenson and Mark Osborne. Before reprising with Cee-lo their cover of “Kung Fu Fighting” for the crowds, Jack Black told reporters that “it was brilliant casting of Shifu, the character he plays in the movie, because Dustin Hoffman is also a master, not of kung fu but of acting. When we worked together I definitely felt like I was in the presence of greatness.” The actor also explained how he has a lot in common with the animated panda he plays on-screen. “The thing about playing Po was that he’s a dreamer. He’s a roly-poly squeezable panda that has a fantasy of being a kung fu master and I can relate to that because in my youth I was a roly-poly squeezable boy. I wanted to be an actor and it seemed like a crazy dream at the time, but I believed in myself and I made it happen.” Animation Magazine’s Ryan Ball, like the majority of journalists so far, politely applauded the film in an editorial note this morning noting that “it’s quite good.”
