Variety reports that Oscar nominated animated film Persepolis has finally been shown in public in Tehran. Based on Marjane Satrapi’s semi-autobiographical graphic novel, Persepolis had angered Iranian authorities for its satirical portrayal of the 1979 Iranian revolution and was condemned by the government as anti-Iranian. This was the first legal screening of the film in Tehran and the version shown was a DVD copy with Farsi subtitles. The screening took place with the approval of the authorities in a cultural center and some 70 people had crowded into a small hall to watch the censored version of the acclaimed film.
