Variety reports that DreamWorks’ animated sequel Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa dominated the North American box office this weekend with a stunning $63.5 million from 4,056 theaters, far exceeding the $47.2 million weekend gross of the first film, Madagascar, in 2005. The film also scored the best opening of the year for an animated title, besting the $63 million for Disney-Pixar’s Wall-E and $60.2 million for Kung Fu Panda. Escape 2 Africa also saw the seventh best opening of all time for an animated film.
