Deadline Hollywood Daily reports that very early box office numbers show that DreamWorks Animation’s Kung Fu Panda punched out at least a $17 million debut Friday in very wide release at 4,114 theaters. That could approach $20M if the West Coast figures continue coming in strong. The toon is well on its way to a $55+M weekend that could reach an incredible $58M-$60M if Saturday’s kiddie matinees are packed. This will easily make the pot-bellied bear the biggest Dreamworks Animation’s non-sequel opening. The panda pic will have three straight weekends to itself before Disney/Pixar’s Wall•E opens. UPDATE: Friday grosses are in and Kung Fu Panda captured an estimated $20M according to Box Office Mojo. This makes it the biggest opening day for an animated feature since last summer’s The Simpsons Movie which launched with a $29.4M Friday, and ranks as the second best first-day tally for a DreamWorks animated film after last year’s Shrek the Third which bowed to $38.4M in May. Kung Fu Panda should finish the weekend north of $60M and possibly as high as $65M, beating Cars‘ opening weekend along the way.
