From 4,122 locations, Shrek the Third easily claimed the top spot at the box office for the weekend of May 18 – 20, 2007, ranking in approximately $122.9 million. The sequel caught an early start on Thursday, opening at 10 pm in close to 1,000 theaters. By Sunday, Third was averaging around $29,597 per cinema. With such numbers, the picture now holds the records for largest animated and DreamWorks openings, as both titles were once occupied by the film’s franchise predecessor, Shrek 2. In addition, Third currently has the third best opening of all-time, behind Spider-Man 3 and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest. Box Office Guru further analyzes the sequel’s success.
