Reports are that Disney and/or Pixar are working to acquire the rights to Tarzan author Edgar Rice Burroughs’ John Carter of Mars series. But the question is will it be for a live-action franchise or an animated film? Variety started the ball rolling, while Dark Horizons and Mania Movies both go into history of the development hell the project has been stuck in for over a decade. CHUD digs a little deeper, discussing the news with producer Don Murphy, who has been associated with the project in the past. CHUD also reports that if Disney doesn’t go animated with it they may sit “on the film for Andrew Stanton, the director of Finding Nemo. Apparently Stanton wants to do a live action movie, and John Carter is what he fancies… but he’s lined up to do Pixar’s post-post-Ratatouille film, meaning he wouldn’t get started on John Carter, at the earliest, until next decade”.
