At Animated News’ sister site, Animated Views, Ben Simon reviews three of the most popular animated DVD titles released this fall: Ratatouille, Pixar Short Films Collection: Volume 1 and Shrek the Third. With Ratatouille, Ben joins most other critics in praising the film, giving it a perfect score of 10. He gives its DVD’s small supply of extras, however, a significantly smaller rating, though still providing the full DVD 8 out of 10 points. A meager amount of supplements also hinder Pixar Short Films Collection: Volume 1 in Ben’s eyes, as he writes “the simple fact is that most of this will already be on most collectors’ shelves in other forms and it loses points by not being the definitive celebration of the shorts or the company’s 20th Anniversary.” As for Shrek the Third, Ben has little positive to say about the latest installment in Dreamworks Animation’s blockbuster franchise. “Those that enjoyed both previous Shreks may find something in here (Gingy!) to enjoy, but box office figures aside, even hard core fans may question the reasoning behind much of what’s happening on screen.”
