At the age of 95, Al Lewis passed away on Friday night, following years of failing health. From 1961-63, Lewis starred in the popular TV classic Car 54, Where Are You?, as Officer Leo Schnauser. The actor later appeared as Leo “Schnauzer” in the show’s 1994 theatrical remake. However, Lewis’ most famous role came in the form of Grandpa Munster, for the 1964-66 television series The Munsters, a role he would continue to be known and loved for. In addition to the original series, Lewis went on to play the part in such Munster-sized projects as Munster, Go Home (1966), The Munsters’ Revenge (1981), and the “Grey Skies” episode of Hi Honey, I’m Home (1991).
With The Mini-Munsters, Lewis was provided a chance to show off his vocal acting. The 1971 project aired as a cartoon special for ABC’s Saturday morning lineup. Lewis was the only member of the original Munster clan to agree to lend his voice for the show. In a 1997 interview, responding to a question about any possible fear of being typecast, the actor answered, “Why would I mind? It pays my mortgage.” For more information on the life of Al Lewis, please visit Yahoo! News and the Internet Movie Database.
