Driving into fourth place at the box office this weekend, Herbie: Fully Loaded collected an estimated $12.8 million over the three-day weekend, despite being shown in 3,521 theaters. Furthermore, the Disney comedy averaged a mild $3,621 over three days. The Friday-to-Sunday performance of the film has set the record for the worst opening ever for a film launching in over 3,500 theaters. Since its opening last Wednesday, Herbie: Fully Loaded has taken in approximately $17.8 million.
Meanwhile, in its fifth week, Madagscar fell an understandable 32%, coming in sixth place with $7.3 million. Thus far, DreamWorks’ CGI hit has grossed $160.1 million. Overall, the top ten films took in an estimated $112.4 million, down 13% from last year when Fahrenheit 9/11 opened at number one with $23.9M. However, the box office was up 4% compared to 2003, when Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle opened with $37.6 million.
