The Big Cartoon Database reports that The Triplets of Belleville was named Canada’s best film Monday night at the 25th annual Genie Awards, which is the equivalent of the Academy Awards. Producer Paul Cadieux accepted the top award at the ceremony, held in Toronto. Also nominated for best motion picture were Being Julia; Love, Sex & Eating the Bones; Ma Vie en Cinemascope; and Looking for Alexander. Triplets opened in Canada on September 7, 2003, which made it ineligible for last years Genie Awards. The other animation winner of the night was Chris Landreth’s National Film Board of Canada production Ryan, which has won both the Genie and the Oscar this year in the same category of best animated short. The Genie Awards are administered by the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television.
