Marc John (previously Head of Digital Cinema for the UK’s largest cinema chain, Odeon) has written in to tell us about a new book, due to be printed in the UK in August, that charts the birth and history of Digital Cinema, the new theatrical exhibition technology that will eventually replace film and revolutionise the way we watch movies and make possible such innovations as Disney’s recent announcement of presenting films such as Chicken Little in true 3D. The door is also now open to theaters to offer “alternative programming”, such as sports and other live events, and the book also covers the organisation of beaming a David Bowie album launch concert via satellite to digitally equipped cinemas in 22 countries worldwide in September 2003. Beaming David Bowie “goes behind the scenes not just of the Bowie gig but the advent of digital cinema at large”.
