The print edition of Video Business indicates that Fox’s release of the $126 million-grossing CG-animated Robots on September 12 will mark the studio’s first simultaneous release for the Sony PlayStation Portable, and is also timed and positioned with marketing muscle that the studio hopes will keep the title on shelves through the fourth-quarter holiday gift buying season. “The two-disc set is being supported by a major media campaign in an effort to set it apart from the wave of new and classic animated movies coming to DVD. Fox says the campaign will be bigger than that for the DVD of Ice Age, which drove that release to one of the Top 5 titles of the 2002 with consumer spending that was more than 50% greater than the movie’s $176 million box office gross, according to VB research. Among the bonus features on the DVD will be an original four-minute CG-animated short, Aunt Fanny’s Tour Of Booty, an X-box racing game and several other interactivities as well as hours of traditional bonus features”. A crowded end-of-year schedule sees Robots up against at least 15 animated DVD premieres, led by Lilo And Stitch 2 on August 30, and special editions of Toy Story (September 6), Cinderella (October 4) and the likely DreamWorks debut of Madagascar and Fox’s own Star Wars: Episode III (both November).
