Proving that the site covers all ends of the animated spectrum, DVD Toons has posted a couple of new pieces. The first is Where’s Popeye? An Interview with Fred Grandinetti, which discusses the lack of authorized Fleischer Studios product featuring the spinach-guzzling sailor on DVD, and Grandinetti’s views on this as well as his long-term attempts to spread the word and set this right. Most interesting is the fact that while Warner Brothers sit on the cartoons awaiting the go ahead from King Features Syndicate, it seems KFS have no actual rights in these cartoons and WB is free to release them anyway, whenever they like.
Next up is the site’s customary in-depth review of Team America: World Police, the “action-comedy-adventure-special-effects-drama-musical-extravaganza-social-issue-piece-animated-with-puppets” which streets next Tuesday 17. “If you take yourself too seriously, you probably won’t ‘get’ it”, says the review, adding that “Luckily, I don’t take myself seriously at all. And I loved it. Jokes come thick and fast and the film deserves multiple viewings (yes, the nuances and clever subtleties ARE there). It’s, simply, a very funny piece of satirical work and is going to be a massive hit on DVD: well over an hour of material provides an abundance of background information, revealing what a challenge it was and how the real-life team were able to pull off this amazingly intricate feat. If this were any other movie, it would be hailed as a technical masterpiece, and if I told you about a movie that raises questions, pushes boundaries and astounds with its frank content, you’d want to see that movie, right? Well, see Team America, and don’t forget to make sure the kids are out of earshot!”
