Video Business reports that Disney will “retire” the original The Lion King and its sequels on home video and DVD, including all special editions and “trilogy” sets. It is not clear when these films will become available again, but it has been confirmed that the Studio will wait until Blu-Ray (Disney’s choice of high-definition disc format) has significant awareness and players in homes before they begin re-issuing any of their animated classics. This could be the last time in quite a while that Simba and company can come home, so if you’re undecided on which to pick up, DVD Toons takes a look at all three: The Lion King Platinum Edition, the special editon of The Lion King II: Simba’s Pride and the fun “alternate take” on the original, last year’s best-selling Lion King 1½. Disney will stop shipping individual copies, as well as a boxed set of the three, from January 31; current inventory will be in stores until retailers run out.
