Kids’ WB! will be unleashing three new series tomorrow, Saturday, September 17th, as part of The WB’s fall season, all produced by Warner Brothers Animation: Loonitics Unleashed, Coconut Fred’s Fruit Salad Island, and Johnny Test. For a preview of each read on!
Loonitics Unleashed is an “action-comedy-adventure” series that features descendants of the Looney Tunes. After a meteor knocks Earth off its axis, the six become imbued with super powers. Ace Bunny (laser vision and martial arts prowess), Lexi Bunny (expert eavesdropping, hypersensitive hearing, aerial agility, and ability to blast objects with her mind), Danger Duck (teleporting expertise and energy sphere hurling), Slam Tasmanian (tornado generation and super strength ), Rev Runner (telekinetic GPS-tracking system and supersonic speed), and Tech E. Coyote (regenerative powers, electromagnetic abilities, and mechanical mastery) are organized into the Loonatics by the mysterious Zadavia who sends the team out on their missions. But the cosmic dust that gave super powers them, has also given the planet’s villains their own uncommon strengths that pose an ongoing threat to Earth.
Loonitics Unleashed has its flaws. The character designs of the Loonitcs are a bit too similar, and the voices are a bit grating at times as they try to sound too “hip”. But overall the show has potential. The story style is classic TV superhero fare. And a touch of the irreverent, sharp-edged wit of the original Looney Tunes is still there. It should appeal to kids who enjoy the classic characters and want something new. And young boys will just love all the action.

Coconut Fred’s Fruit Salad Island is a wacky comedy starring a coconut named Fred and a full cast of fruits who live on a tiny island. Fred is a ball of boundless energy driven by an insatiable curiosity. And anything he envisions has the ability to come to life, whether it’s a volcano that previously didn’t exist or a bunch of monsters that are now wreaking havoc all over the island. Completely unaware, Fred seems to inadvertently control the physical reality of their oasis, which tends to freak out his fellow islanders. The show uses a unique combination of 2-D Flash animated characters set against a collage of photo-realistic backgrounds.
Let’s get this out of the way first. Coconut Fred was obviously inspired by SpongeBob SquarePants. But unlike other shows that try to emulate established hits and invariably fail (most often because they fail to understand what makes the hit show work), Coconut Fred gets it right. They have taken the best of SpongeBob, added their own style, tweaked it with some new twists, and the result is a wonderful zany adventure where you have no idea what is coming next. Rob Paulsen (the Emmy Award winning voice of Pinky in WB’s Pinky & The Brain, among many others) gives voice to the title character and, as usual for him, does a stellar job. This show should appeal to kids of all ages and even a lot of adults as well.
Coconut Fred’s Fruit Salad Island debuts Saturday, September 17th at 10:30am ET.
Johnny Test is the story of an 11 year old boy who has a zest for life and an ambition just one step behind his ability. Luckily for him he has super-genius twin sisters (Susan and Mary, the only 13-year-olds in the doctorate program at the Porkbelly Mega Institute of Technology) who can create anything they imagine, from a time machine to a supersonic scooter. Bribed with spectacular gifts, special powers and even the offer to do his chores, Johnny willingly acts as his sisters’ test subject. By his side, albeit reluctantly sometimes, is his dog Dukey who has been genetically enhanced by Susan and Mary. Johnny always emerges from his out-of-this-world escapades unscathed. Unfortunately, Dukey’s not always so lucky, and Susan and Mary are often grounded by their parents.
Johnny Test debuts Saturday, September 17th at 11:00am ET.
