Box Office Mojo reports that The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie opened with $32 million this weekend, coming in second to National Treasure’s $35.1 million. Nick Movies notes that the take shatters “the previous record held by The Rugrats Movie in 1998 at $27.3 million… to make it the strongest opening ever for a Nickelodeon Movies release”. The Incredibles dropped to #3 with $26.5 million ($177.5 million total). The Polar Express finished at #4 with $15.6 million ($51.5 million total). Adding in Shark Tale’s $0.6 million ($158.4 million total), animated films raked in almost $75 million in the three day period!
